At 70% smaller than MiniDV tapes, MicroMV is the smallest video tape format. It was created by, and is currently only used by Sony. It records in MPEG format, which makes it more difficult to edit. MicroMV tapes have 64K of built in memory, which is used to index the scenes and images. It records at 12 MB per second, which is just less than half what MiniDV records at. Sony claims that despite the lower bitrate, the video is just as high quality as MiniDV because the MPEG compression is more effective.
